Votedar

Privacy Policy

Effective June 7, 2026

Overview

Votedar ("we," "us") provides a non-partisan voter information service for people in the United States. This policy describes how we handle information when you use votedar.com and the Votedar iOS app (bundle ID com.votedar.app), which loads the same website in a secure in-app browser.

Information we collect

  • Account data: email address and a hashed password.
  • Voter identity (signup): legal name, date of birth, and state of residence. County and ZIP code are optional.
  • Profile data (optional): party affiliation, self-reported registration status, and congressional district.
  • Integrity data: a one-way identity hash derived from normalized name, date of birth, and state — used only to prevent duplicate accounts. We do not store the raw hash inputs separately from your profile fields.
  • Session data: a server-side session identifier stored in an HTTP-only cookie (votedar_session) while you are signed in.
  • Reminder preferences: election-phase reminders you acknowledge or dismiss on your dashboard.

How we use information

  • Create and secure your account (one person, one account).
  • Show election radar, ballot summaries, and reminders tailored to your state and district when you provide it.
  • Send optional email reminders when you have enabled mail on the server and a reminder is due.
  • Maintain audit logs when a duplicate signup attempt is blocked.
  • Operate, protect, and improve the service.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not verify your registration with a state election office in the current release — registration status is self-reported.
  • We do not collect precise GPS location from the iOS app. Location context comes from information you enter (state, county, district).

Third-party services

Votedar may link to or display data from public sources such as the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and vote.gov. Those sites have their own privacy policies. If email reminders are enabled, messages are sent through our configured mail provider using your account email address only for Votedar notifications.

Data storage and security

Account and profile data are stored on servers we control in a SQLite database. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. Sessions expire after 30 days of inactivity or when you sign out. Production traffic uses HTTPS. Access to servers is limited to operational needs.

iOS app

The Votedar iOS app does not maintain a separate account database on your device. It displays votedar.com, where the practices in this policy apply. Standard iOS WebView cookies may be stored locally so you can stay signed in, consistent with the website.

Retention and deletion

We retain account data while your account is active. Duplicate-signup audit events may be retained for integrity and security. To request account deletion or a copy of your data, contact us through the channels listed on votedar.com. We will verify your identity before fulfilling requests.

Children

Votedar is intended for voters who can lawfully create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page will change when we do. Continued use of Votedar after an update means you accept the revised policy.
